Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
The hideout of the wolves! The unique Malepère appellation sits in the foothills of the Pyrenees, one of the most interesting and unique winegrowing areas of the Languedoc-Roussillon. Grapes conditioned for cool weather thrive here. Yet, there is sufficient sun for the grapes to fully ripen and develop their best qualities. The soil composition is a special feature of this terroir. The mixture of clay, sandstone, and limestone, as well as large boulders, gave rise to the less-than-flattering name “Malepère,” literally translated as “bad stone.” This “bad stone” soil, however, contributes to the mineralization of the vines. Additionally, the stones absorb heat from the searing Languedoc sunshine, storing the warmth and protecting the vines on cool nights.
Production Notes
The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented at cool temperatures preserving wonderful fruit aromas. Matured in stainless steel tanks to bring out the flavours of the varieties.
Winemaker Notes
Winemaker Jem Harris moved to the Languedoc-Roussillon from Australia. He exemplifies the best of Old World terroir in the hands of a New World winemaker. Domaine La Louviére is owned by the famous Grohe family of designer bathroom hardware. Connoisseurs of quality, the family recognized the value of the terroir and acquired the domaine.
