Often categorized as one of the best wines of Pic-Saint-Loup, L'Ombrée charms with its beautiful bright red color and aromas of red and black fruits such as blueberries and blackberries.  Hints of spices, licorice and touches of violets and garrigue take us to a silky and delicate palate with a savory texture and long and fine tannins.

Perfect with roasted or grilled prime beef; slow-roasted barbecued pork with black pepper and cumin laced barbeque sauce.

Wine Profile
Vineyard Notes
Domaine de L'Hortus lies in a stunning valley between the Pic St Loup and the Hortus escarpment. The vineyards are in the heart of the wild garrigue, 30 kms to the north of Montpellier. Over millennia, the limestone, scree-covered slopes of the Pic Saint Loup and the Hortus plateau evolved into the current complex geology, with stone features that protect the land from extreme climatic variations. The soils were formed by alluvial, limestone deposits at altitudes of 150 meters. Organic practices include the use of manure as a natural fertilizer, organic copper and sulfur as pesticides.
Production Notes
Hand harvested. A vatting period of 25 to 30 days. Fermentation temperature below 24°C. Aged for 12 months in tanks and 12 months in bottle.
Winemaker Notes
Domaine de L'Hortus was established in 1978 when Jean Orliac, a professor of agriculture and avid rock climber, fell “head over heels” in love with the region and purchased land in and around the beautiful Pic St Loup cliffs. After years spent befriending the vines and reviving 50 hectares of wooded slopes, Jean and his family bottled their first wine in 1990. Today, the first class Domaine de l’Hortus continues to devote passion, knowledge and patience to creating some of the Languedoc's best wines. The team consists of four siblings: Marie, Francois, Yves, and Martin Orliac. There are also 11 full-time employees, along with 40 seasonal workers.
Food Pairing Notes
Perfect with roasted or grilled prime beef; slow-roasted barbecued pork with black pepper and cumin laced barbeque sauce.
